With the great development that we are witnessing in our daily life, the use of cell phones has become a necessity more than a luxury, but the use of these devices may lead to many damages, so what is the harm of a mobile phone to the eye?

 

Damage to mobile phone on the eye :

The blue light is emitted by smart mobile phones and it negatively affects the human eye, the blue light is emitted naturally from the sun, and it has many benefits including stimulating memory, increasing attention and alertness, improving mood, regulating the natural rhythm of sleep, in addition to Its role in supporting the growth of visual cells, especially in children.

Although cell phones emit the same type of rays, exposure to blue light and rays from electrical devices may cause many damage to eyesight, and we mention in the following the most prominent damages of a mobile phone to the eye:

1- Most of the rays from cell phones to the retina are absorbed by the lens and the cornea, which causes damage to the cells of the retina and causes macular degeneration (macular degeneration) in the long term, causing serious vision problems.

2- One of the most prominent damages of a mobile phone to the eye is to reduce the eye’s ability to see long-range vision or what is known as short-sightedness (Nearsightedness), especially in children, where the harm of blue light is greater on children, because their eyes absorb blue light more.

3- Using cell phones for long hours without rest

 increases the chance of many vision problems,

 such as cataract or cataract,

 the appearance of pterygium in the eye,

 and the occurrence of cancer in the visual tissues.


4- In the case of using cell phones, the rate of blinking of the eyes decreases without the person noticing it, which leads to fatigue and redness of the eyes, blurred vision, and the occurrence of severe dryness or what is known as dry eye syndrome.

Damage to blue light on the eyes:

 

 Smartphones and other portable devices transmit light, and the blue light emitted from cell phones is very toxic; Because it has a shorter wavelength compared to other colors, and this can lead to macular degeneration, which may lead to vision loss, and this disease results due to the death of the photoreceptor cell in the retina, and the photoreceptor cells capture visual images, And send it to the brain using a molecule called the retina, and it is important to mention that these cells do not regenerate when they die, and to reduce the damage of this light, you should reduce the time of using cell phones, close the eyes for a short period, or stare at a distance to help relax the eye muscle, and reduce stress.

 

 

Phone damage mitigation tips :

 

After cell phones and electrical devices of all kinds have become an integral part of daily life, it has become indispensable to use them, but the damages of a mobile phone can be mitigated by following the following tips:

 

Not to use a mobile phone or any electronic device such as computers and tablets of all kinds for more than 20 continuous minutes, as it is advised to do any other activity that does not require the eyes to focus on close objects for at least 20 seconds.

The use of blue light protection glasses when using a mobile phone or computer, to reduce eye fatigue resulting from blue light, and these glasses also have a role in reducing sleep disturbance resulting from the use of cell phones.

Try to keep the mobile phone away from you while in use, by using the loudspeaker for calls and not talking on the phone for a long time. You can also use the Hands-free accessory mode to make calls without using the phone close-up.

Although the protectors used to protect against the rays of cell phones protect from blue light, they increase the energy that the phone automatically emits and thus the rays emitted by it, so their use is no longer recommended in the case of using phones and smart devices.

Ensure that children are obligated to a certain period during the day to use phones and smart devices, and encourage them to go out of the house and engage in physical activities with their peers.

It is recommended to reduce the brightness of cell phones lighting, and to maintain an adequate distance during use.

In the event that you suffer from redness and dry eyes, it is recommended to use moisturizing eye drops after consulting a doctor.

Make sure to see an ophthalmologist periodically to perform the necessary checks to ensure the safety of your eyesight.

 

What is age-related macular degeneration?

Excessive screen usage and exposure to blue light has been found to accelerate the development of age-related macular degeneration (AMD). AMD mostly occurs after the age of 60, but experts believe that, as time goes on and screen usage increases, this will be brought forwards. In fact, it’s predicted that by 2040, 288 million people will be affected. blue light destroys the eye’s photoreceptor cells and therefore hinders central vision. Some newer studies, however, suggest that blue light instead “promotes the growth of poisonous molecules” in your eyes, causing AMD. This is because it is beamed directly into your retina, causing much more damage than other less intense forms of light.

Symptoms of AMD are usually seen in your central vision in the form of distorted or blurred objects. As the condition progresses, black spots may appear in your central vision, blocking your view. Other symptoms can be colours appearing faded, hallucinations, and straight lines appearing wavy .  AMD is one of the world’s leading causes of blindness, so it’s important to understand how your lifestyle choices – such as screen use – may affect its development.
